Paw Lan Gyi Elephants Camp
Experience the wonder of the wild at Paw Lan Gyi, one of three elephant camps in Bago’s Pyay District. Home to tamed elephants kept in the natural environment of Taung Nawin Forest in Pauk Kaung Township, the camp is a peaceful sanctuary away from the illegal logging rampant in northeastern Burma.
This serene corner of Burma was once a bustling logging site, but all that changed in 2012 when the government decided to reduce timber production and conserve the Bago mountain range. Now, state-owned Myanmar Timber Enterprise—overseen by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation—holds a monopoly on the formal timber sector, granting subcontracts to numerous companies while keeping illegal logging operations in check.
In April 2014, Burma enacted a ban on raw timber log exports to slow down deforestation and increase domestic production. Two years later, the new National League for Democracy (NLD) government made the decision to terminate all logging operations and in July declared a 10-year moratorium on timber extraction in the Bago mountain range.These decisions made workers and elephants involved in timber extraction redundant. To help sustain the livelihoods of the logging workers and retired elephants, Myanmar Timber Enterprise has since repurposed several logging camps into elephant camps or ecotourism sites.
One of these is Paw Lan Gyi, located in the mountains about 50 miles away from Pyay. This camp is a small village with 37 households, most of them Myanmar Timber Enterprise staff, including mahouts, their assistants and their families.
At present, the wild hosts 12 elephants – one male and 11 females, ranging in age from 34 to 75. This camp, opened to all in 2013, is not permanent, so visitors must obtain prior authorization to enter the site. On the 28th of December last year, the camp welcomed over 20 international guests. This attraction is only open to foreign visitors on a yearly basis.
At Paw Lan Gyi, retired elephants from the Myanmar Timber Enterprise are kept in the wild. Day-to-day, staff members search for them in the morning, bathe them, check their health and release them back into the forest.
