Day 1: Arrival Yangon & Yangon City Tour
Upon arrival in Yangon (formerly Rangoon), you will be greeted by your guide who will accompany and transfer you to your hotel. This charming and peaceful city boasts impressive colonial and spiritual sites, making it a must-see in Southeast Asia. Note that early check-in is subject to room availability.
This afternoon, we will explore the city center, an area filled with historical and colonial buildings, partly by car and partly by foot. Our first stop will be Sule Pagoda, an ancient temple of 2200 years, situated on the outskirts of multiple government buildings and commercial stores. We’ll then move to Mahabandoola Park, where the Independent Monument stands. After that, we’ll pass City Hall, as well as a little India and a little China.
Finish your day at Shwedagon Pagoda, a world wonder constructed 2500 years ago. It houses hair relics of Buddha and is a place where devoted Buddhists gather to meditate and pray. Marvel at the magnificent golden stupa from this remarkable viewpoint. Spend the night in Yangon.
Day 2: Yangon – Bagan & Bagan City Tour
This morning, you’ll transfer to the airport for the flight to NyaungOo, home to the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River. Bagan is the site of the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins, some dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Upon arrival, you’ll start your exploration with a visit to an elevated temple for a panoramic view of the exquisite Bagan plains.
Visit the Golden Shwezigon Pagoda – the first and prototype monument built in Myanmar style in 1087 – and then explore Gubyaukgyi Cave Temple in Wetkyi-Inn Village, renowned for its exquisite jataka mural paintings. Lastly, discover the elegant Htilominlo Temple, boasting fine plaster carvings and glazed sandstone decorations.
This afternoon, experience the traditional craftsmanship of Myanmar at a lacquer ware workshop. Then, marvel at the architectural masterpiece and beauty of Ananda Temple, with its two unique Buddha images that appear to change expression from different angles. Later, take in the impressive heights of Thatbyinnyu, the grandeur of Dhammayangyi Temple, and the intricate architecture of Sulamani Temple. Finally, gaze out over the plains as the sun sets from an upper terrace of one of the temples in Bagan before retiring for the night.
Day 3: Bagan – Mandalay
After your morning meal, you’ll travel to Mandalay by road. In the afternoon, you’ll reach Mandalay and transfer to the hotel for check-in and to relax. The remainder of the day is for your own leisure. Spend the night in Mandalay.
Day 4: Mandalay – Amarapura – Mandalay City Tour
After breakfast, we will drive to Amarapura, the former capital of Myanmar, which translates to ‘City of Immortality’. As Myanmar’s cultural capital, Mandalay is focused on nature and is home to an abrupt hill rising above a vast moated and walled square. Our first stop is a silk weaving workshop, where exquisite handmade products are produced. We will then visit Mahagandayon monastery, where over one thousand monks reside.
In the afternoon, visit Mahamuni Pogada and its 13ft-high seated Buddha image, one of Myanmar’s most renowned. Then, experience the Kuthodaw Pagoda, the ‘World’s Biggest Book’ with its 729 marble stone slabs of Buddhist scriptures. Afterwards, venture to Shwenandaw Monastery, the only surviving structure from the 19th century Royal Palace, renowned for its beautiful woodcarving. Finally, climb Mandalay Hill to witness marvellous views of the city and Irrawaddy River. Spend the night in Mandalay.
Day 5: Mandalay – Ava – Sagaing
Following breakfast, we’ll venture to Ava – an ancient city, a remote rural area with scattered ruins, monasteries and stupas. We’ll explore Ava by horse cart, seeing the BagayaKyaung (a delightful teak monastery), MahaAungmyeBonzan (a royal temple constructed from stucco-covered brick), and Nanmyin (a leaning lookout of Ava).
Take a boat ride back to land and drive to Sagaing, crossing a bridge over the Irrawaddy River. Here you will be amazed by the numerous white-and-gold stupas, a hallmark of Sagaing. This is the spiritual capital of Myanmar, home to 3,000 monks and 100 meditation centers, including the awe-inspiring Swan OoPon Nya Shin and U Min ThoneSae Pagodas. Visit the local market to find locally made pottery, silver, and other handicrafts, and the pottery village to witness the making of the traditional water pots. Lastly, marvel at U Bein Bridge, the world’s longest and 200-year-old teak bridge. Enjoy a leisurely walk and the stunning views of the local farms and streams. Spend the night in Mandalay.
Day 6: Mandalay – Yangon & Yangon City Tour
After breakfast, drive to Mandalay Airport for the flight to Yangon and upon arrival, transfer to the hotel (early check-in is subject to room availability). Today is a free day in Yangon, with your car and guide at your disposal for any sightseeing or shopping you may wish to do. You will then proceed to Bogyoke Market (formerly known as Scott’s Market), where you can check out the various Myanmar handicrafts and other items (note: it is closed on Mondays and public holidays). Spend the night in Yangon.
Day 7: Yangon International Departure
Enjoy your leisure time today at the hotel before transferring to the airport for your departing flight.
